Word Wars

Summary:

Runner-up in Gamebridge's Best Team Project 2023, (https://gamebridge.uk/2023-festival/) 'Word Wars' is a 2-player ascii-styled text-based battle game, where you and your opponent have 3 minutes to try to destroy each other's tower by typing out as many words as you can from the letters you're given. Every time you spell a new word, the word becomes a projectile that you can then fire at your opponent's tower. The game was made over 2 days by our team of three for an internal game jam at the National Film and Television School (where I'm currently studying).

Inspirations:

The brief given for the jam was to create an action game whose central mechanic was based on typing via the keyboard. After some brainstorming, we decided to make a game with an art style inspired by the early days of computers (fitting the keyboard typing theme) and gameplay that could be enjoyed by two friends sitting down to play a competitive game together.

My Role & Collaborators:

The game was made by our team of three, and apart from contributing when we were developing the idea for the game, my main role in the jam was in creating all of the artwork for the game out - this was a fun creative challenge as all the artwork was made solely out of keys on a keyboard.

Above, you can see a screen recording of the game.

Below, you can see a few initial sketches of tower designs, examples of the 2D art assets I made for the game, and a few more screenshots.
